DOGS Bullets & Carnage

Before I go into the review for this episode of the four part OVA series of DOGS Bullets & Carnage, it that the elements that attracted me to this anime was the intriguing character designs, and that the OVA anime format has more leverage to include materials/elements that generally normal isn’t seen in an anime TV series format.

This episode entitled Weepy Old Killer, deals the Mihai training Ian to be a hitman. I thought that the twist of having to raise a hitman, and being in love with a prostitute (Milena), and sort of acting life a family, is really interesting. I thought that the twist of this episode revealing that Ian later kills Milena, really added some interesting character development between Ian and Kiri. I thought that is was nice that this episode was able to show how Mihai got the scar above is left forehead.

I thought that the scene of seeing Mihai and Ian shoot together the sniper in this episode was a nice touch to this episode, as it built upon the previous scenes in this short OVA episode. I’m not going to go into detail about why Ian killed Milena in this episode, but Ian’s reason, really added some character development to Ian’s relationship with Mihai.

Overall, I thought that this OVA episode was surprising good, and that this OVA episode depicted blood from gun shoot wounds well, which tends to be left out in most anime TV series. I thought that the slow pan of Mihai at the end of this episode, which was a really nice touch.

The second episode of DOGS Bullets & Carnage is entitled Gun Smoker, as the main character in this OVA episode is Badou. Badou is an information gatherer, that likes to smoke, and his job involves getting a hold of dangerous information and selling it at a high price. Badou’s job lands him catching the Don of the West 4th Street Family taking part in one of his hobbies. This episode basically deals with the Don of the West 4th Street Family trying to get ‘top secret files’ from Badou, while Badou is trying to get his nicotine fix.

This episode in parts had me in stitches, as I thought that Badou’s character was really interesting and that this episode was more lighthearted then the previous of DOGS Bullets & Carnage. As this episode featured Mihai from the previous episode of DOGS Bullets & Carnage, I thought that this episode was really good despite the viewer having to ignore the events of the previous episode of DOGS Bullets & Carnage. Anyway I’m looking forward to the next episode of DOGS Bullets & Carnage, as the next episode deals with female character, which reminds me of Saya from Blood+.

This episode of DOGS Bullets & Carnage is entitled Blade Maiden, the main character of this episode is Naota, and it is about her relationship with her teacher and Magato (a fellow student of Magato and Naota). This episode basically Naota living everyday for revenge of her teacher killing Naoto’s parents. I thought that the character development that occurs in this episode between Naota and her teacher is interesting. I thought that the way that Magato killed his and Naota’s teacher was really bloody and gruesome, as Magato cut of his teacher’s right leg, left arm and then stabbing him through the heart with a knife.

I thought that the action scene between Magato and Naota in this episode was short and sweet. I personally rate this episode from an animation point of view, higher then the previous episodes of DOGS Bullets & Carnage, on the fact that when animators have to deal with characters wielding swords or objects that are long and/or large, more time is need to animate that character with that weapon, then a character holding a gun, which is easier to draw and animate then a character with a sword or object that is large.

This episode of DOGS Bullets & Carnage is entitled Stray dogs howling in the dark, and the main character in the final episode of this four part OVA series is Heine Rammsteiner. This episode deals with Heine rescuing a mute girl aged fourteen years old from some gang, but this episode later reveals that her name is Nill. After Heine rescues Nill from some mobsters, the mobsters capture Nill, and Heine teams up with Badou to rescue Nill.

I thought the blind long haired priest that is a friend of Heine, had the right idea to dress Nill up in clothes, that made Nill looks perfect on her, to make her irresistible and make a person want to hug her slender body.

I thought that this episode provide some more interesting characters, while also hinting about Heine’s past, that doesn’t get explored in this episode. The only element of this episode that I disliked was that there was no ending credits span of Heine, like the previous three episodes of DOGS Bullets & Carnage OVA series.

Overall, I found this four part OVA series a breath of fresh air, as it deals with interesting characters, and also providing some interesting character develop, the most anime series fail to deliver in their TV run. As I have learned that there is manga series entitled Dogs Carnage, that seems to be some sort of incarnation/manga about the four main leads in this OVA series, and I personally wouldn’t mind seeing a TV series of this manga, from the same production crew of this OVA series, as I think that it would make a great anime TV series, with of course minimal editing to the manga contents/story.

If one is wondering which episode(s) out of the four I liked in particular order, below is my list.

1) Episode 3
2) Episode 4
3) Episode 2
4) Episode 1

OVA Rating: A
